Hey friend,

I want to share with you a new perspective on scoliosis. It truly is fascinating if you really think about it. We have bodies that have a malleable spine. Who thought such a thing could even be possible. It can be really scary when your sitting in the doctor’s office and they use these terms like ‘abnormal curvature’ and give no reason behind where this comes from and why it affects certain people and not others. The thing that I’ve learned about western medicine is that there is a name for EVERYTHING. The truth about humans is that everyone is different. We each have our own unique makeup that is a riddle we each have an individual journey to solve it. These are the steps that helped me better understand what it means to have scoliosis.

Step 1 : Be thankful for the gift of this body

I will never forget the words from my yoga instructor, “for whatever reason, you were gifted with this body”. How beautiful is that? My body is a gift and I am so thankful for all it does for me. It is mine and it demands TLC. Love it. Cherish it. Admire it. I am a firm believer that no one should enjoy the beauty of your body more than you do. Wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and love everything that you see. You belong to your body and your body belongs to you. It is perfect just as it is.

Step 2: Treat yo’ self

When I was a teenager, I wondered what having scoliosis would mean later in life. What I’ve discovered is that the only thing I need to fear is not scoliosis, it is stress. Stress is no joke. Stress can be good, it teaches you what you do and do not like, but it must be managed. A part of finding the right balance is pursuing passions, while also treating my body to luxuries along the way.

Step 3: Prescription You

The ‘wait and see’ approach to scoliosis treatment is where the physician will monitor the progression of the curve(s)

My body has taught me that I have limits. Limits emotionally, limits physically.
