Hi! I’m Carlyn and I’m so glad you are here.
I love learning about health and wellness. In particular, as it pertains to what I can do to take care of my body, my spirit and my mind.
A friend of mine said to me once “you only get one you. You gotta love it.” She is so right. I have made the focus of this site a discussion around spinal health, back pain and scoliosis with a focus on how to create a healthy lifestyle that meets the unique needs for individuals with spinal curvatures. I personally believe that the gift of scoliosis is that it teaches us about the body in a profound way. I do not see it as a condition, disease or abnormality as most western medicine describes it (though I may refer to it as such in posts for the sake of easy communication). I see it as just a part of what makes me… me. I do not associate my back pain with having scoliosis. I associate back pain with my body being in a state of stress for too long. With having scoliosis, I do proceed cautiously in my decisions, and the pleasant surprise that has come out of it is seeing my friends and family (who do not have scoliosis) experience positive results using the same methods.
What does ‘the curvy truth’ mean?
I was googling scoliosis to learn about what things I should be doing and really make sure I didn’t totally jack myself up as an adult by neglecting my body. The last thing I want is complications because of having surgery as a teen that I didn’t address correctly as I aged. What I found was pretty horrifying. The internet is splattered with unflattering imagery of x-rays and drawings with accompanying text that used language that made me want to slap someone. I’m not a violent person, but this stuff was making me mad. So this site is my outlet to create a peaceful place to talk about scoliosis in a more pleasant light of hope and encouragement.
So, what do I do for my day job?
I am a User Experience Architect which means I spend my days making digital products user friendly. I love what I do. This also means I spend most of my time sitting down, which is not good for my health. I find joy in actively pursuing a healthy lifestyle and that what has led me here to share them with you :)
